Biostatistics II: Practical Issues and Solutions Conducting scientific research is inevitably connected to methodological decisions and unforeseen problems: How do I choose an appropriate statistical method? How many participants do I need for my study? What do I do when my data do not meet the requirements of my method of choice, e.g. because they are not normally distributed, or my sample is too small? How do I interpret my data in a scientifically sound way? Can I also provide evidence for the absence of an effect? This course is intended for all those who encounter similar questions in their research and want to learn strategies and methods to solve typical problems. Therefore, we will focus on the following topics (among others): - Choice of methods - Power analysis and sample size calculation - Common problems and misconceptions - Resampling as an all-purpose weapon - Good practice in data analysis an interpretation - p-value and Bayes Factor In order to maximally profit from the workshop, participants should have a reasonably solid knowledge of statistical basics or follow the course “Biostatistics I” first.
